A man has won a six-figure sum in compensation for pain, suffering and loss of earnings after doctors failed to order a scan that would have diagnosed a perforated appendix.
Philip Russell, 42, was admitted to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester suffering from abdominal pains. Scans and X-rays were carried out and he was told that he would need an exploratory operation.
By this time, Mr Russell's appendix had already perforated and there was an indication of this on the ultrasound report. However, doctors failed to take this into account in their treatment and did not order a CT scan.
As a result, the perforated appendix was not found until Mr Russell underwent surgery and this meant that his recovery was prolonged. Following discharge from hospital he was unable to work for several months and required four further operations to correct intestinal problems.
The Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust agreed to the settlement after an independent expert found that the care provided by the Hospital was below standard.
