As most people know, the musical ‘The Sound of Music’ has a happy ending – or it usually does anyway.

The perennial favourite is often presented in ‘sing-along’ form with members of the audience invited to dress up in costume and sing along with the familiar songs. Sometimes the audience joins the cast up on stage and this is where the unhappy ending came for over 20 ‘nuns’ who went to see the show at Birmingham’s Alexandra theatre in September 2003. Having climbed up on stage to take part in the production, the stage collapsed, throwing them into the orchestra pit. As a result, 22 people were taken to hospital with injuries of various kinds.

One woman has already been awarded compensation of £3,000 on account of the neck and back injuries she suffered. Further compensation payments are expected following the conclusion of criminal proceedings against the theatre and the production company.
