Drink-Drive Victim Awarded £6.5 Million

A woman who was knocked down in April 2002 by a drunk driver has been awarded £6.5m in compensation for her injuries. Nikki Buckley, 22, was walking near her home in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, when a car mounted the pavement and struck her. She suffered severe spinal injuries and is now paralysed with only minimal use of her arms.

Miss Buckley now lives in accommodation that has been specially adapted for her needs and requires 24-hour care.

The compensation was awarded by the High Court in Birmingham and will enable Miss Buckley to have a degree of independence.

The driver of the vehicle was convicted in July 2002 of dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment and given a four-year driving ban.
