Supermarkets owe customers a reasonable duty of care to ensure that they can carry out their shopping safely without the risk of injury. A woman who was injured by falling soup cans in a supermarket recently won £2,000 in compensation. The woman, who was shopping with a friend, reached for a can from a special offer display. Unfortunately, the cans were stacked to a height of almost two metres. As she reached for the can, a tray made of cardboard and containing three large cans of soup fell and injured her.
In the accident the woman suffered a broken toe and bruising to her foot and required hospital treatment as a result. She pursued a claim against the supermarket on the ground that the soup cans had been stacked at a height which was unsafe for customers. The woman received £2,000 to compensate her for the injury. Accidents in supermarkets causing personal injury are all too common, particularly those involving slips and trips. If you are uncertain whether or not you have a right to compensation, contact us to discuss your claim.
