A cleaner who slipped in a puddle of water at the shopping centre where she worked has been awarded £3,500 in compensation.
Susan Marriott, 51, worked at the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield. She had been asked to place warning cones around puddles, caused by a leaking roof, in order to protect the public. On her way to do this she slipped on a different patch of water and injured her back and shoulder.
After the accident Mrs Marriot was forced to take months off work. Three years after the incident she is still in pain and has been unable to return to work full-time. She has been told that she could suffer from back pain for the rest of her life.
The management of the shopping centre had known about the leaking roof for some time but the problem had not been solved. The puddles of water were a clear risk to both staff members and the public.
Employers have a responsibility to identify potential risks and to take action to protect, as far as is practicable, the health and safety of their staff as well as that of members of the general public. A leaking roof presents a clear hazard. Slips and trips can have painful and long-lasting consequences for those involved.
