Two victims of medical mistakes have been awarded substantial compensation after developing cerebral palsy.
In the first case, £8.3m was awarded to a 16-year-old girl for injuries she suffered as a result of incorrect treatment given to her mother when she was giving birth at Cardiff University Hospital.
The girl has been left with severe involuntary movements which make everyday activities very difficult. Despite her physical difficulties, her mental faculties are unimpaired. The award will pay for the high level of support she will require for the rest of her life.
In the second case, Oliver Fenton, now six, sustained injuries during his birth at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. He was left with severe cerebral palsy. He has impaired vision and problems moving his limbs. He is unable to speak, although he is able to communicate using facial expressions.
Because of his condition, the boy has a reduced life expectancy.
The Hospital NHS Trust admitted negligent treatment and the judge awarded Oliver compensation of £5.4m. This comprises a lump sum and annual payments of £250,000 for the rest of his life.
