A Durham man who was injured when trying to put away a bouncy castle was recently awarded £33,750 in compensation for a serious lower-back injury. The 51-year-old man was trying to move the rolled-up bouncy castle onto a trolley when the load shifted and he hurt his back.
His employer, Durham County Council, had failed to introduce a safe handling system with regard to the bouncy castle, despite having been made aware that this should not be attempted by a lone employee and a risk assessment confirming that this should not be done. Evidence was given that it was normal practice for the equipment to be put away by an employee working alone.
