£800,000 Award to Family of Injured Baby

The family of a baby who sustained horrific injuries in a car crash has been awarded £800,000 in compensation.

Cerys Edwards, who was just 11 months old, was injured in a crash caused by Antonio Singh Boparan. Mr Boparan was attempting to overtake another vehicle and was travelling at 72 mph in a 30 mph zone when he lost control of his car.

The accident left Cerys with serious brain damage – she is now unable to walk or talk and cannot breathe without the help of a ventilator. As she requires 24-hour care, she has to live in a rehabilitation centre some 150 miles from her family's home.

Compensation of £800,000 was eventually agreed in court. This will allow the Edwards family to buy a house that can be specially adapted for Cerys so that she can move out of the rehabilitation centre.

A further application will be made in the future to decide the amount payable by the insurance company to cover Cerys's future care.

Mr Boparan was convicted of dangerous driving, jailed for 21 months and banned from driving for five years.
