A man whose life was ruined after he was hit on the back of the neck in a freak accident has been awarded £1m in compensation.
John MacMaster was standing outside a London pub when the accident occurred. A sun lounger blew off the roof of the pub and crashed into him. The force of the blow was so great that it knocked him to the ground.
Mr MacMaster suffered both mental and physical injuries in the accident. He was left with a severe neck injury and the accident also triggered a depressive psychosis. He is now extremely paranoid and suspicious of anyone he meets.
After the accident Mr MacMaster had to give up his business collecting, repairing and delivering wooden pallets.
A judge in the High Court approved the settlement which will be invested on Mr MacMaster's behalf. It is hoped that the treatment he is undergoing will prove successful and that he will one day again be able to manage his own affairs.
